Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Ghana on July 2, 2025, marked a historic moment as the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the nation in over three decades. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral ties, deepen cooperation, and reaffirm India's commitment to engaging with Africa and the Global South. During the visit, India and Ghana signed four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation in culture, health, standardisation, and institutional dialogue.

The MoUs signed covered several key areas:

• Cultural Exchange Programme (CEP): To promote understanding and exchanges in art, music, dance, literature, and heritage.
• Cooperation in Standardisation: Between the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to enhance collaboration in standardisation, certification, and conformity assessment.
• Traditional Medicine: Collaboration between the Institute of Traditional & Alternative Medicine (ITAM), Ghana, and the Institute of Teaching & Research in Ayurveda (ITRA), India, to cooperate in traditional medicine education, training, and research.
• Joint Commission Meeting: To institutionalise high-level dialogue and review bilateral cooperation mechanisms regularly.

Beyond the signed agreements, several other key aspects of the visit underscored the deepening relationship between India and Ghana. PM Modi and President John Dramani Mahama agreed to elevate the bilateral partnership to a "Comprehensive Partnership". They also set the goal of doubling bilateral trade within the next five years. India has been a committed development partner for Ghana, extending approximately $450 million in concessional credit and grants for infrastructure and capacity-building projects.

Both sides agreed to increase cooperation in areas such as training of armed forces, maritime security, defence supply, and cyber security. They committed to advancing defence ties under the framework of "security through solidarity".

India has also offered to share its expertise in UPI digital payments with Ghana in the FinTech sector. President Mahama expressed interest in making Ghana a hub for vaccine production, inviting Indian entrepreneurs to establish manufacturing units in pharmaceuticals and vaccines.

PM Modi was conferred with 'The Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana', the country's national honour. He also addressed the Parliament of Ghana.

The visit is expected to deepen cooperation in trade, development partnership, capacity building, and cultural exchange. It also underscored India's commitment to strengthening its engagement with Africa and Global South Partners.
