In a significant boost to the Make in India initiative, the nation's first tempered glass manufacturing facility for mobile devices was inaugurated in Noida. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, officially opened the plant on Friday, August 30, 2025. This marks a major step forward in indigenous electronics production.

The facility is established by Optiemus Electronics in collaboration with Corning Incorporated (USA). It will produce high-quality cover glass under the globally recognized brand “Engineered by Corning”. The products will cater to both domestic and international markets.

Vaishnaw stated that the indigenous manufacturing of tempered glass is a significant stride in the success of the Make in India initiative and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision. He added that India would progressively manufacture every component used in mobile phones, including chips, cover glasses, and laptop and server components. This will help position India as a key player in global electronics manufacturing. Vaishnaw also revealed that a Made-in-India semiconductor chip is expected to be rolled out soon.

Optiemus Infracom has invested ₹70 crore in the first phase of the factory. The plant has an installed capacity of 25 million units per annum and will generate direct employment for over 600 people. In the second phase, the company will scale up the capacity to 200 million units per annum for local and global markets, with an additional investment of ₹800 crore. This expansion is expected to generate over 4,500 jobs. Overall, Optiemus is set to invest ₹870 crore in this project. Furthermore, the company intends to establish another factory in South India during Phase 2, investing ₹450 crore with a production capacity of 15 crore tempered glass units.

The plant is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure for end-to-end production of tempered glass. The manufacturing processes include scribing, shaping, polishing, chemical tempering, coating, printing, and lamination. Each stage undergoes stringent quality inspections, ensuring standardized, high-quality tempered glass for Indian consumers.

The domestic tempered glass market is estimated at 500 million pieces annually, worth nearly ₹20,000 crore in retail value. The global market exceeds $60 billion, highlighting the opportunity for India to emerge as a key supplier.

Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom Limited, expressed his aspiration that every Indian mobile phone user uses Make in India tempered glass with BIS certification and fog marking to protect their screens. Optiemus plans to launch 'Made-in-India' tempered glass under the brand RhinoTech from September, offering unlimited replacements during the one-year warranty period.

Vaishnaw highlighted the growth of electronics manufacturing in India, which has increased six times in the past 11 years to reach a production value of ₹11.5 lakh crore. Exports have touched ₹3 lakh crore, providing direct and indirect employment to 25 lakh people. He also emphasized the importance of increasing research headcount to strengthen product design and development within the electronics manufacturing industry.
