The industrial engineering company secured an order worth ₹80 crore (approximately $9 million) from Tata Steel for the engineering, design, manufacture, and supply of a push-pull pickling line and acid regeneration plant (ARP) for Tata Steel's Tinplate Division in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

The agreement requires John Cockerill India to deliver critical components and oversee the erection and commissioning of the equipment to ensure it meets contractual performance guarantees. This includes supplying all essential components for the push-pull pickling line and ARP facilities. The project is slated for completion by mid-2027.

The new equipment is intended to support processing operations at Tata Steel's Jamshedpur facility. Tata Steel's Jamshedpur Operations

Tata Steel's Jamshedpur plant has a long history, with the first steel production dating back to February 16, 1912. In January 2025, the plant's H-Blast Furnace exceeded 50 million tonnes of hot metal production, marking a first in India without undergoing mid-term repairs. Tata Steel has been focusing on modernizing its Jamshedpur plant and supporting long-term capacity expansion. In March 2016, Tata Steel received environmental clearance for a ₹1,877 crore expansion project to increase the plant's crude steel capacity from 9.7 mtpa to 11 mtpa through debottlenecking.

Kawale brings over 18 years of experience in industrial project management, engineering strategy, and operations across India and Europe. He previously served as Global Project Director, Metals Business, at John Cockerill Industry in Belgium.

Other Developments at Tata Steel Jamshedpur

In addition to the John Cockerill India contract, GAIL (India) Ltd has entered into an agreement with Tata Steel for the supply of natural gas to the Combi-Mill plant in Jamshedpur. GAIL will supply 31,000 standard cubic meters per day (SCMD) of natural gas until March 2026, scaling up to 43,000 SCMD thereafter. This agreement is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production operations.
