Dhanush has confirmed that the highly anticipated sequel to the 2018 gangster drama Vada Chennai will begin shooting in 2026 and is slated for release in 2027. The actor made the announcement at the pre-release event for his upcoming movie, Idli Kadai, in Madurai, much to the delight of fans who have been eagerly awaiting the continuation of the Vada Chennai saga.
Vada Chennai, directed by Vetrimaaran, is a gritty action drama centered around Anbu, a young carrom player who gets drawn into the criminal underworld and politics of North Chennai. The film, which also stars Andrea Jeremiah, Aishwarya Rajesh, Kishore, Daniel Balaji, Samuthirakani, and Pawan, was a commercial success and has garnered a dedicated fan base. The film's ending left several narrative threads open, fueling speculation and demand for a sequel.
Dhanush's confirmation puts an end to rumors that the project had been shelved. He initially hinted at the sequel's production at the audio launch of his film Kubera. Vetrimaaran had also previously stated that Vada Chennai 2 would commence after he completes Suriya's Vaadivaasal.
At the Idli Kadai event, Dhanush also spoke about Idli Kadai, describing it as an emotional film that families can connect with. Idli Kadai is scheduled to release on October 1st. Dhanush also has Tere Ishk Mein, directed by Aanand L Rai, scheduled for release this year. Other projects include 'D56' with Mari Selvaraj, an Ilaiyaraaja biopic directed by Arun Matheswaran, and a Hindi-language biopic on Abdul Kalam directed by Om Raut.
