The Delhi High Court is currently scrutinizing a request from Priya Sachdev Kapur, the widow of the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, to keep the details of his assets confidential in the ongoing inheritance dispute. This dispute involves Sunjay Kapur's children from his previous marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan Raj, and his mother, Rani Kapur. The core issue revolves around a contested will, with the children alleging that Priya Sachdev Kapur "forged and fabricated" the document to exclude them from their rightful inheritance of their father's multi-crore estate. The estate is estimated to be worth ₹30,000 crore.
Priya Sachdev Kapur has sought the court's permission to submit a list of Sunjay Kapur's movable and immovable assets in a sealed envelope. Furthermore, she has requested that all parties involved, including Sunjay Kapur's mother and children, sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before gaining access to these asset details. As an alternative, she proposed creating a "Confidentiality Club" to restrict access to designated advocates and representatives. Her legal team, led by Senior Advocate Shyel Trehan, cited cybersecurity risks and the potential misuse of sensitive financial information as reasons for demanding the NDA. Trehan also highlighted concerns about court pleadings being leaked to the media, leading to press conferences outside the court after hearings.
Justice Jyoti Singh of the Delhi High Court has expressed reservations about Priya Sachdev Kapur's NDA demand. The court noted that imposing a blanket seal or requiring an NDA could compromise the rights of Karisma Kapoor's children to question the disclosed assets. Justice Singh stated that unless all parties have access to the asset details, they cannot properly respond and defend their case. The court has signaled openness to suggestions that would balance privacy with fairness but emphasized that the entire suit cannot be in a sealed cover.
The legal team representing Karisma Kapoor's children has strongly opposed Priya Sachdev Kapur's plea, with their counsel alleging that "banks have been wiped off, there is nothing left in the bank account". They argue that inheritance disputes are civil matters where beneficiaries must be free to scrutinize disclosed assets and that transparency cannot be optional. The children, Samaira and Kiaan, are seeking a division of the estate, a detailed account of the assets, and a permanent injunction against Priya Sachdev Kapur and other family members to prevent them from dealing with the estate until the case is resolved. They claim they were unaware of the will's existence and seek their rightful share as Class I legal heirs, each demanding a one-fifth share of the assets.
Sunjay Kapur's mother, Rani Kapur, has also raised objections, alleging that her rights under the family trust were undermined after Priya Sachdev Kapur's marriage. Represented by Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, Rani Kapur expressed concern for her grandchildren and claimed she never received a copy of the will despite repeated requests.
The dispute centers around a purported will dated March 2025, which allegedly bequeaths Sunjay Kapur's entire personal estate to Priya Sachdev Kapur. Karisma Kapoor's children have contested the document, claiming it is a forgery and seeking to be recognized as legal heirs to their father's estate. The court has ordered Priya Sachdev Kapur to disclose all assets as of the date of Sunjay Kapur's death and has scheduled further hearings to address the claims of forgery, conspiracy, and mismanagement. The next hearing is scheduled for September 26.
