Miley Cyrus recently revealed that she has kept the dress she wore on her first date with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. In a September 24 interview with Vogue, the Grammy winner spoke about how her fashion choices symbolize a "true evolution" in her life.
Cyrus stated, "I literally have a dress that I had on when I met my ex-husband, and then I have my dress that I wore on our first date, along with letters and things". The "Flowers" singer is carefully organizing her life's archives and "creating a legacy rack," which will showcase a few looks from each era that she wants to be remembered for.
The 32-year-old singer explained her motivation behind saving these memories, "I want to savor these kind of beautiful moments of my life, but because these intimate moments have also been public moments, it's a little bit tough to decide what piece I want to share and what I would ever allow to be seen". She acknowledged the difficulty in choosing what to share, given the public nature of those private times.
Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship began in 2009 after they met on the set of the movie The Last Song. They had an on-again, off-again romance. Hemsworth proposed in 2012 with a 3.5-carat ring, but they called off the engagement in 2013. The couple reconciled in 2016, resumed their engagement with a new ring, and ultimately married in December 2018. However, they separated the following year, and Hemsworth filed for divorce in 2019, citing irreconcilable differences; the divorce was finalized in 2020.
Cyrus sees her evolving style as more than just costumes. "Everything I do in my life is a little bit intense, but it has to be holistic. And that's why my eras, they're not a costume, they're actually like a metamorphosis or a true evolution for me personally," she said.
