He then directed Highway in 2014 and Tamasha in 2015, continuing to explore themes of love, self-discovery, and societal expectations.

Recent Work: Amar Singh Chamkila
In his first collaboration with Netflix, Ali directed Amar Singh Chamkila, a biographical drama about the life of the Punjabi musician Amar Singh Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. The film, released on April 12, 2024, has been well-received by critics and audiences, with many considering it a return to form for Ali.
Amar Singh Chamkila tells the story of the singer's rise to fame and the controversies surrounding his music, which ultimately led to his assassination. The film features music by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil. Dosanjh and Chopra also lent their voices to some of the original Chamkila songs in Punjabi. The movie was filmed in real locations to capture the atmosphere of Punjab's folk music scene.
The film has garnered international recognition, with Diljit Dosanjh receiving a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor and the film itself being nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini-Series at the International Emmy Awards 2025.
