Ghana Secures 2026 World Cup Berth: Joins Ranks as Fifth African Nation to Qualify

Ghana has secured its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the fifth African nation to qualify for the tournament. The Black Stars clinched their spot with a 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium. This win ensured they finished top of Group I with 25 points.

The decisive goal in the match against Comoros came from Tottenham forward Mohammed Kudus in the 47th minute, assisted by Thomas Partey.

Ghana's qualification marks their fifth appearance at the World Cup. They join Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia as the African countries that have already qualified for the 2026 tournament.

The 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the first to feature an expanded format of 48 teams. This expansion has opened up more opportunities for countries from all confederations to participate. Africa will have nine guaranteed spots at the tournament, with a possibility of a tenth nation qualifying through an intercontinental playoff.

Even though Ghana won, they were helped by the fact that Madagascar, who were in second place, lost 4-1 to Mali.

Nine African teams will qualify directly for the tournament. The four best runners-up from the groups will compete in a mini-tournament consisting of two semi-finals and a final, with the winner advancing to the FIFA playoff tournament. In that tournament, they will face teams from Asia, CONCACAF, South America, and Oceania.
