Mumbai, October 15, 2025 – The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, best known for his iconic portrayal of Karna in B.R. Chopra's "Mahabharat". Dheer passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 68 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
The news of his demise was confirmed by the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) and his close friend, Amit Behl. According to reports, Dheer had been battling cancer for some time, and despite undergoing surgery, the disease relapsed a few months ago.
The cremation was held at 4:30 PM at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle, Mumbai. Numerous members of the film and television fraternity gathered to pay their last respects. Among those present was Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who arrived amidst tight security to offer his condolences to the Dheer family.
Videos circulating on social media show Salman Khan at the funeral, offering support to Pankaj Dheer’s son, Nikitin Dheer. Khan was seen embracing Nikitin, who is also an actor, in a gesture of solidarity and grief. The actor's face reflected the sadness of the occasion as he paid his respects.
Pankaj Dheer's career spanned several decades, with his role as Karna in the 1988 "Mahabharat" becoming his most memorable. His portrayal of the warrior prince won him widespread acclaim and made him a household name. He also starred in "Chandrakanta". Beyond television, Dheer also featured in minor roles in many films.
Amit Behl, a long-time friend and colleague of Dheer, expressed his shock and sadness upon hearing the news. He recalled Dheer's previous battle with illness a few years ago, from which he had recovered.
Arjun Feroz Khan, who played Arjuna in "Mahabharat," shared a throwback picture with Dheer on Instagram, expressing his sorrow.
Pankaj Dheer is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, and his son, Nikitin Dheer, who is married to actress Kratika Sengar. His legacy as an actor and his contribution to Indian television will be remembered by generations. Reportedly, his estimated net worth was around $180 million.
