On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Indian stock market will be closed for regular trading in observance of Diwali Laxmi Pujan. However, both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will conduct a special one-hour Muhurat trading session.
Muhurat Trading 2025: An Auspicious Hour
Muhurat trading is a symbolic trading session held on Diwali, considered an auspicious time to make fresh trades and investments. It marks the beginning of Samvat 2082, the new Hindu financial year, and is believed to bring prosperity and financial success. This tradition was initiated by the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1957, and the National Stock Exchange has continued it since 1992.
Muhurat Trading Schedule
This year, the Muhurat trading session will be held on October 21, 2025, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM. There will be a pre-opening session from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM. The trade modification window and collateral cut-off will close at 2:55 PM.
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (MCX) and National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will also observe the special Muhurat Trading window on October 21, 2025. The MCX pre-open session will be from 1:30 p.m. to 1:44 p.m., and the Muhurat trading window will be from 1:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Settlement and Market Closure
All trades executed during the Muhurat session will carry regular settlement obligations. This means that delivery and payment duties for buyers and sellers will be executed just like on any normal trading day.
The markets will remain closed on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, for Diwali Balipratipada. Regular trading activities will resume on Thursday, October 23.
Historical Significance and Market Sentiment
The Muhurat trading session often sees positive sentiment and increased retail participation. Historically, the Sensex has closed higher in 14 of the past 18 years during this session, underscoring investors' faith in this auspicious occasion. Market experts are optimistic about the year ahead, expecting stronger earnings and supportive government policies to drive the markets forward.
Additional Holidays
The NSE has 14 public holidays in 2025, affecting equity, derivatives, and commodity trading. Aside from Diwali Laxmi Pujan and Diwali Balipratipada, the stock markets will also be closed on November 5 for Guru Nanak Jayanti and December 25 for Christmas.
