Aamir Khan remembers Asrani: A timeless artist whose comedic genius and legacy will forever bring joy.

A wave of grief has swept through the Indian film industry and beyond following the passing of veteran actor Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani, who breathed his last on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the age of 84. The actor, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and memorable performances in over 300 films, had been suffering from a prolonged illness.

Among the countless tributes pouring in, one stood out as a testament to Asrani's impact: a heartfelt message from Aamir Khan, who mourned the loss of a "timeless artist". Khan expressed his sorrow on social media, acknowledging Asrani's immense contribution to Indian cinema and stating that his "legacy lives on in every laugh" he brought to audiences across generations.

Asrani’s nephew, Ashok, confirmed the news of his death, noting that the actor had been battling age-related ailments. He was admitted to Bharatiya Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu four days prior to his demise due to fluid accumulation in his lungs. His last rites were held at the Santacruz Crematorium on the same day, with family and close friends in attendance. In accordance with Asrani's wishes for a private farewell, the funeral was a quiet affair.

Asrani's career spanned over five decades, during which he became a household name with roles in iconic films such as "Sholay," "Namak Haram," and "Guddi". His portrayal of the quirky jailer in "Sholay" remains etched in the memories of moviegoers. Beyond acting, Asrani also directed and wrote films, including "Chala Murari Hero Banne".

The news of Asrani's passing was met with shock and disbelief, particularly as a Diwali greeting was shared on his Instagram Story just hours before the reports of his death surfaced. It remains uncertain whether the post was made by Asrani himself or by someone from his family or staff.

Numerous celebrities have shared their condolences and memories of working with Asrani. Akshay Kumar, who worked with Asrani in several films, including "Hera Pheri," "Bhagam Bhag," and "Welcome," expressed his grief, remembering Asrani's legendary comic timing and the warmth he exuded. Kajol, Rajpal Yadav, and Adnan Sami also paid tribute to the veteran actor, acknowledging his immense contribution to Indian cinema. Adnan Sami reflected on Asrani's "enthusiasm and passion" as an example for all, lauding him as a "thorough gentleman, full of love & grace".

Asrani is survived by his wife, Manju Asrani, his sister, and nephew. His departure marks the end of an era in Bollywood, leaving a void that will be difficult to fill. However, as Aamir Khan so aptly stated, Asrani's legacy will continue to resonate through the countless moments of joy and laughter he gifted to the world.
