A blast in Amritsar on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, has triggered a high-level investigation, with initial findings suggesting that what appeared to be an accidental explosion was, in fact, a planned terror attack. The incident occurred near Majitha Road, claiming the life of an individual suspected to be linked to a Khalistani terrorist group.
According to police sources, the deceased was allegedly attempting to retrieve a consignment of explosives when the device detonated, leading to his death. The mishandling of the explosives is believed to be the immediate cause of the blast. However, authorities are exploring the possibility of a larger terror plot, indicating that the incident was not merely an accident but a deliberate act with potentially far-reaching implications.
Amritsar Rural SSP Maninder Singh stated that the police had been tracking the individual, who they suspected was there to retrieve explosives. He added that such locations have been used by anti-national elements for similar retrievals in the past. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Border Range), Satinder Singh, said that initial investigations suggest the involvement of the ISI-backed Babbar Khalsa, with the aim of disrupting peace in the region.
The explosion's intensity was such that both arms of the deceased were blown off. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud blast, prompting locals to rush to the scene and alert the police. Forensic teams and the bomb disposal squad were immediately dispatched to the site to collect evidence and determine the nature of the explosive device, with possibilities including a grenade or an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
While investigations are still underway, authorities are piecing together the sequence of events leading up to the blast. It is believed that the suspected terrorist had buried an explosive at the site earlier and returned to retrieve it when the device detonated. The police are working to identify the deceased and any accomplices who may have been involved. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to gather additional clues.
The incident has sparked political reactions, with opposition parties criticizing the AAP government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Concerns have been raised about security lapses and potential terror links, especially given recent cross-border threats and rising gang activity in Punjab. Some have called for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the probe to uncover the broader terror nexus operating in the region.
