Smart Center Shopping: Two Key Free Agent Targets for the Hurricanes' Offensive Improvement

The Carolina Hurricanes are heading into the 2025 NHL free agency period with a clear goal: to win a Stanley Cup, and then keep winning. General Manager Eric Tulsky has emphasized the team's commitment to improving the roster by any means necessary, and with a projected $28.4 million in cap space, the Hurricanes are expected to be aggressive in pursuing top talent. One of their primary needs is a bonafide second-line center to play behind Sebastian Aho. Addressing this need through free agency could significantly bolster their offensive depth and overall competitiveness.

For the past two seasons, the Hurricanes have lacked a true second-line center since Vincent Trocheck's departure. While Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordan Staal have contributed, the team needs a player who can consistently drive offense and provide a reliable scoring threat. Several free-agent centers could fit this role, and the Hurricanes should carefully evaluate their options to find the best fit for their system and team culture.

Here are two centers that the Hurricanes should consider pursuing in free agency:

Pius Suter:

Pius Suter, a 29-year-old Swiss forward, could be a solid addition to the Hurricanes' roster. Suter is coming off a career year with the Vancouver Canucks, where he recorded 25 goals and 46 points in 81 games. His previous contract had an average annual value (AAV) of $1.6 million, making him a cost-effective option for the Hurricanes.

Suter's strengths lie in his offensive versatility and hockey sense. He has a knack for finding open ice and possesses a good shot. During the 2024-25 season, he averaged a career-high 17:21 of ice time, demonstrating his ability to handle a significant role. Suter also contributed on special teams, scoring two power-play goals and one shorthanded goal. While not a flashy player, Suter is reliable and can provide the secondary scoring the Hurricanes desperately need. His consistent performance and reasonable price tag make him an attractive target for Carolina.

Sam Bennett:

Sam Bennett of the Florida Panthers is another intriguing option. Bennett's current playoff performance is elevating his value, showcasing his potential as a top-six forward. While he had a suspension earlier in the season, Bennett brings a blend of skill and physicality that could benefit the Hurricanes. He has a knack for scoring timely goals and isn't afraid to play a hard-nosed game. However, the Hurricanes need to consider the cost and potential risks associated with signing Bennett. His past disciplinary issues could be a concern, and his price tag might be higher than other options.
