The Assam police have further intensified their crackdown on individuals expressing support for Pakistan, with two more arrests made, bringing the total number of arrests to 92. These arrests are part of an ongoing effort by the Assam government to curb what they deem as "anti-national" activities and pro-Pakistan sentiments, particularly on social media platforms.
The recent surge in arrests follows the terror attack that occurred in Pahalgam in April, which significantly heightened tensions and prompted a stricter stance against those perceived to be sympathetic towards Pakistan. The Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been a vocal proponent of this crackdown, asserting that the state is actively monitoring social media for posts that exhibit anti-India or pro-Pakistan sentiments.
On June 5, 2025, four individuals were apprehended for allegedly being "sympathisers of Pakistan" and for posting communal content on social media in connection to the Pahalgam terror attack. Those arrested were Amir Hamza from Kamrup, Mustafa Ahmed from Hailakandi, Subahan Ali from Darrang, and Meher Ali from Barpeta. Chief Minister Sarma stated that these individuals had made offensive comments against Hindu deities and India, emphasizing that the crackdown on "traitors" would persist.
Prior to these arrests, authorities had already taken numerous individuals into custody for similar reasons. In late May, one more individual, Farijul Haque from Mangaldai in Darrang district, was arrested on suspicion of being a Pakistan sympathiser, bringing the total at that time to 79. Just days later, that number climbed to 81, with arrests made in Sonitpur and Kamrup districts. By June 3, 2025, the number had reached 82 with the arrest of Ajibul Islam from Lakhimpur district.
The crackdown has drawn mixed reactions. Supporters of the government's actions argue that such measures are necessary to maintain national security and prevent the spread of divisive ideologies. Critics, however, voice concerns about the potential for misuse of power and the suppression of free speech. Some have pointed out that the definition of "sympathising with Pakistan" can be subjective and may lead to the targeting of individuals for expressing dissenting opinions.
The situation remains tense, and the Assam government has indicated that the crackdown will continue. The police have been directed to take strict action against anyone found engaging in activities deemed detrimental to India's interests. This includes monitoring social media, identifying individuals expressing pro-Pakistan sentiments, and taking legal action against them.
