The highly anticipated first Test between India and England is set to commence on June 20th at Headingley, Leeds, marking the start of a new era for the Indian cricket team. With the recent retirements of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, a significant void has opened up in the batting order, paving the way for fresh talent and reshuffled responsibilities. All eyes are now on the new captain, Shubman Gill, and how he constructs his batting lineup for this crucial series opener.

One of the most discussed topics leading up to the Test has been the opening combination. It is widely speculated that KL Rahul is set to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal. Rahul's experience and adaptability make him a valuable asset at the top of the order. He has previously opened for India with success, including a notable performance in Australia where he displayed resilience and grit. His ability to handle the new ball and weather the initial storm in English conditions will be vital for India's chances.

The No. 3 position is also subject to much speculation. While Shubman Gill has batted at this position before, there's a strong possibility that Sai Sudharsan will make his Test debut at No. 3. Sudharsan has been in excellent form, particularly in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and is known for his solid technique and temperament. Some reports suggest that the team management is keen to give him an opportunity to showcase his skills in Test cricket. Should Sudharsan falter, Abhimanyu Easwaran is waiting in the wings.

The captain himself, Shubman Gill, is expected to bat at No. 4, taking over the crucial position previously held by Virat Kohli. While Gill has primarily been an opener or No. 3 batsman, his adaptability and leadership qualities make him a strong contender for this role. Former India player Deep Dasgupta believes that Gill is better suited for the middle order in Test cricket, and that his captaincy will be enhanced by performing well with the bat.

The middle order is likely to feature Rishabh Pant at No. 5, followed by Karun Nair at No. 6. Nair's return to the Test squad after a long hiatus has generated considerable excitement, and his impressive Ranji Trophy season has earned him a chance to prove his mettle once again. His experience and solid technique could provide stability to the middle order.

Ravindra Jadeja is expected to play as an all-rounder at No. 7, adding depth to both the batting and bowling departments.

The bowling attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, with Prasidh Krishna also likely to be included in the playing XI. The selection of the No. 8 position is still uncertain, with several options in contention, including Shardul Thakur, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, and Washington Sundar. The final decision will depend on the pitch conditions and the team's strategy.

This Test series marks a significant transition for the Indian team. The absence of Kohli and Sharma creates a leadership and experience vacuum, and the onus is on the younger players to step up and seize the opportunity. The predicted batting order reflects a blend of youth and experience, with Gill, Rahul, and Pant expected to shoulder the bulk of the responsibility. How this new-look batting lineup performs in the challenging English conditions will be a key factor in determining India's success in the series.
