A firing incident occurred near the residence of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav in Patna on Thursday, June 19, 2025, prompting a police investigation. The incident took place at 1 Polo Road, a high-security zone that houses the residences of several prominent political figures, including Minister Ashok Choudhary, and is located close to the Governor's residence (Raj Bhavan), the Chief Minister's residence, judges' residences, and the airport.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred around 8:15 am in the VIP Kaushal Nagar area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Airport police station. Preliminary investigations suggest that two bike-borne assailants allegedly attempted to rob a youth named Rahul. During the attempted robbery, the assailants fired a shot. Fortunately, Rahul escaped unhurt, and the attackers fled the scene.
Police have recovered a bullet shell from the location and have initiated raids to apprehend the suspects. City SP Central, Diksha, stated that the police received a report of a snatching incident involving a young man from whom items worth ₹400 were taken. While his phone and other belongings were not stolen, he was pushed and shoved by the assailants, resulting in a fall. A shot was fired during the scuffle, but no injuries were reported. The police are currently investigating the matter, focusing on a nearby slum area.
Tejashwi Yadav has responded to the incident with strong criticism of the Bihar government, describing it as "jungle raj" in a social media post. He asserted that the morale of criminals protected by the state government is so high that they are openly firing in high-security zones. He questioned the state of law and order, particularly given the proximity to key official residences and the airport. Yadav also alluded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Bihar, suggesting that the incident might be downplayed by the media to maintain a positive image.
The incident has sparked concerns about the security arrangements for VIPs and the overall law and order situation in Bihar. It has also provided an opportunity for opposition parties to target the Nitish Kumar government.
