The highly anticipated Madhubala biopic, once brimming with promise, has reportedly hit a roadblock. According to recent reports, the ambitious project is currently on hold as the makers are revisiting and reworking its financial plan.

Originally envisioned as a grand cinematic tribute to the legendary actress, the biopic, directed by Jasmeet K. Reen, the director of ‘Darlings’ fame and produced by a collaboration of Sony Pictures, Brewing Thoughts Pvt. Ltd, and Madhubala Ventures (representing the late actress's family), encountered unexpected hurdles related to its budget. The film was initially slated to be a lavish production, with an estimated budget ranging from ₹80 to ₹100 crore. However, sources indicate that the high costs associated with recreating the period settings and ensuring authentic detailing proved to be a significant challenge.

The financial strain has compelled the producers to re-evaluate their approach and explore avenues to optimize the budget without compromising the film's creative vision. This has led to a temporary suspension of pre-production activities, including set construction and casting finalizations.

News of the delay has understandably caused concern among fans and industry insiders alike. Madhubala's sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan, has voiced her frustration over the slow progress of the project. In February 2025, she revealed that she had served a legal notice to Sony Pictures, expressing her anxiety and disappointment over the lack of updates and the extended delay. Madhur Brij Bhushan emphasized her commitment to safeguarding her family's interests and ensuring that her sister's life is portrayed accurately and respectfully on screen. She also stated that she and her partners would do everything possible, including taking legal steps, to prevent any unauthorized attempts to create a film or show on Madhubala's life.

Despite the current setback, there remains a strong determination to bring Madhubala's extraordinary story to the big screen. The makers are actively exploring various strategies to streamline the production process and secure additional funding, and filming could start by the second quarter of 2026. The team remains committed to delivering a fitting tribute to the iconic actress, capturing her talent, beauty, and the challenges she faced throughout her life. The film intends to showcase lesser-known facets of Madhubala's life and dispel inaccuracies that have circulated over the years.

Madhubala, often dubbed the "Venus of Indian Cinema," was one of the most celebrated actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi, she appeared in over 60 films during her illustrious 22-year career, leaving an indelible mark on the industry with her captivating performances and timeless beauty. Her iconic roles in films like "Mughal-e-Azam," "Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi," and "Mr. and Mrs. 55" continue to be cherished by audiences today.
