Maple Leafs: Tavares' Changing Role, Marner's Impact, and Unexpected Pacioretty Interest Surfaces.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing a pivotal offseason with key players' contracts expiring and potential roster changes looming. Negotiations with captain John Tavares have taken an unexpected turn, while the future of Mitch Marner in Toronto remains uncertain. Veteran forward Max Pacioretty's potential return also adds another layer of intrigue to the Leafs' offseason puzzle.

Tavares Contract Talks Take a Twist

John Tavares, who is nearing unrestricted free agency this summer, has expressed his desire to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, initial contract negotiations appear to be far apart. According to reports, the Maple Leafs' opening offer was a three-year deal with an average annual value (AAV) of less than $4 million. This offer is considered a significant lowball, especially considering Tavares' consistent performance. Last season, he recorded 74 points in 75 games, including 38 goals.

While Tavares struggled in the playoffs, with just seven points in 13 games, his overall contribution and leadership are highly valued by the team. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun suggests that a four-year, $20 million deal ($5 million AAV) might be the "sweet spot" for both sides. Comparable players like Matt Duchene and Brock Nelson have recently signed deals with AAVs between $4.5 million and $7.5 million.

TSN's Chris Johnston believes that although money is a key sticking point, that both sides want Tavares to stay. He noted that Tavares might accept a longer contract to help the team manage the cap space. The Leafs have approximately $20 million in cap space and need to sign some players and can't spend too much money on Tavares. With free agency approaching on July 1st, the pressure is on for both sides to find common ground and secure Tavares' future in Toronto.

Marner's Future in Toronto

Mitch Marner's future with the Maple Leafs is also a major topic of discussion. Recent reports suggest that the star winger may be seeking a fresh start elsewhere, with contract talks at a standstill. While money is a factor, some insiders believe Marner's desire to leave Toronto stems from the intense pressure and expectations of playing in the Toronto market.

Several teams have expressed interest in acquiring Marner, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks. The Golden Knights have reportedly been interested in Marner for nearly a year and a potential sign-and-trade deal could be in the works. This could involve the Leafs acquiring a player such as William Karlsson, Tomas Hertl, or Ivan Barbashev from Vegas in return. The Dallas Stars are also a potential destination, with Jason Robertson being a possible trade piece.

The Maple Leafs could also explore signing Marner to a contract and then trading his rights. The Leafs risk losing Marner for nothing if he leaves. If both Tavares and Marner leave, it would result in a significant loss of offense, with 65 goals and 176 points walking out the door.

Pacioretty's Potential Return

Veteran forward Max Pacioretty, who joined the Maple Leafs on a one-year deal last season, is also considering his future. After a strong performance in the playoffs, where he recorded three goals and eight points in 11 games, Pacioretty has expressed uncertainty about continuing his NHL career.

One of Pacioretty's main priorities is being close to his family, which could factor into his decision. While the Maple Leafs are interested in re-signing him, the Detroit Red Wings are also reportedly in the mix. Head Coach Craig Berube has praised Pacioretty's dedication and physicality, and the organization would welcome him back.

Pacioretty's ability to provide depth scoring and leadership makes him a valuable asset, but his injury history and age are factors to consider. If Pacioretty is willing to take a team friendly deal, he could very well remain in Toronto.
