Selena Gomez is officially set to reprise her iconic role as Alex Russo in Season 2 of "Wizards Beyond Waverly Place". This exciting news has sparked a wave of nostalgia and anticipation among fans of the original Disney Channel series, "Wizards of Waverly Place," which catapulted Gomez to global stardom.
Gomez herself teased her return with an Instagram post on Thursday, featuring a photo of herself on set holding a wand, captioned "Just feels right…". Disney later confirmed that she will be guest-starring in the upcoming season. Further fueling the excitement, Gomez shared a behind-the-scenes snapshot with David Henrie, who plays her brother Justin Russo, with the caption, "We want to do this foreva… Luv u brudder".
"Wizards Beyond Waverly Place" picks up years after the original series, with Justin Russo now living a normal, human life with his family after a mysterious incident at WizTech led him to give up his wizard powers. The spin-off, which premiered in October 2024, introduces a new young wizard-in-training, Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), whom Alex introduces to Justin in Season 1. Season 2 will see Billie grappling with the complexities of being a Russo, especially now that she's not the only wizard in the house. With Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko) also developing magical powers, Justin is tasked with training three young wizards for the Family Wizard Competition.
However, a mysterious new threat emerges, raising the stakes and potentially unraveling the Russo family forever. The synopsis for the new season reads: “Billie grapples with the fact that being part of the Russo family might be more complicated than she thought — especially now that she's not the only wizard in the house. Thanks to Roman and Milo's new magical powers, Justin is now tasked with training three young wizards for the Family Wizard Competition. As the stakes rise inside and outside the family, a mysterious new threat emerges — one that could unravel the Russos forever”.
Gomez will appear in Season 2, where Alex Russo helps train Billie. Gomez also appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in June 2024 and mentioned how much the show meant to her. She stated, "I will be in the first episode, I'm executive producing it, and it brings me to tears because that is where I started, and to honor it in this way has truly been a blast, and I just can't wait to release it".
The series will also welcome new stars Janice LeAnn Brown as the powerful, young wizard Billie, Alkaio Thiele as Justin's eldest son Roman, Max Matenko as Justin's youngest son Milo and Mimi Gianopulos as Justin's wife Giada.
Fans can look forward to more Russo family magic and drama when Season 2 airs this fall on both Disney+ and Disney Channel. Season 1 is currently available for streaming.
