Cody Ceci's Unexpected Move: Defenseman Joins the Los Angeles Kings in a Surprising Contract Agreement.

In a move that has surprised some observers, veteran defenseman Cody Ceci has inked a four-year, $18 million deal with the Los Angeles Kings. The contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $4.5 million. This signing marks the seventh NHL team for the 31-year-old Ceci, who has previously played for the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks, and Dallas Stars.

Ceci's arrival in Los Angeles coincides with the Kings also signing defenseman Brian Dumoulin to a three-year contract with a $4 million AAV and goaltender Anton Forsberg to a two-year deal at $2.25 million per season. Forsberg is expected to serve as Darcy Kuemper's backup.

Ceci is coming off a season where he split time between the Dallas Stars and San Jose Sharks, recording four goals and 20 assists in 85 regular-season games. In 18 playoff games, he added three assists.

The right-handed defenseman is viewed as a potential replacement for Vladislav Gavrikov on the Kings' blue line, but at a lower cost. Ceci, known for his steady defensive play and experience, will be expected to contribute to the Kings' defensive depth and penalty-killing unit. Throughout his career, Ceci has provided a physical presence and a willingness to block shots, qualities that should endear him to the Kings' coaching staff and fans.

While not known for his offensive prowess, Ceci has shown the ability to contribute offensively at times throughout his career. The Kings will likely be looking for him to provide a calming presence on the blue line and to make smart, simple plays to help the team transition from defense to offense.

The length and dollar amount of Ceci's contract have raised some eyebrows, as he is not generally considered a top-pairing defenseman. However, the Kings clearly value his experience and believe he can be a valuable asset to their team. The Kings are aiming to bolster their defense, and adding Ceci and Dumoulin certainly addresses that need.

This move signifies the Kings' commitment to improving their team and competing for a Stanley Cup. By adding Ceci, the Kings are hoping to solidify their defense and add a veteran presence to their locker room. Only time will tell if this signing proves to be a successful one for the Kings.
