England right-back Lucy Bronze believes that the Lionesses' challenging start to the Women's European Championship will ultimately benefit their title defense. The team is set to face formidable opponents early in the tournament, which Bronze views as an exciting opportunity to test themselves against the best from the outset.

Sarina Wiegman's squad will kick off their campaign against France in Zurich. Following this tough opener, they will face the Netherlands before concluding the group stage against Wales. With France and the Netherlands both ranked in the top 11 globally, England faces a more immediate and demanding challenge compared to their 2023 World Cup group matches.

Bronze acknowledges the inherent pressure of such a difficult start. A loss against France, she says, would be viewed critically, while a victory would be celebrated. However, she prefers to focus on the positives, emphasizing the chance to gauge their level against top-tier competition right away. She believes that facing strong teams early eliminates any surprises later in the tournament, setting a clear standard for what it will take to defend their title.

“We know the standard that you have to be at, whereas other teams maybe can build in, but you don't really know the level then,” Bronze stated. She welcomes the opportunity to play high-stakes games against the best players from the very beginning. "I think when you get to these kinds of tournaments, you want to play in the big games against the best players. And why not have it in your first game? It makes it more exciting".

Bronze's experience playing in France with Lyon has given her valuable insight into many of the French players. She is familiar with their strengths and playing styles, which could give England an edge. "France are a team I really love playing against for that reason".

Bronze's influence on the team extends beyond her on-field abilities. She is the squad's most capped player and a serial winner, having achieved domestic trebles in three different countries: France, Spain, and England. Her winning mentality is infectious, and she embraces the pressure of high expectations. "The more trophies I can win in an England shirt the better. It's the best achievement because the opportunities are so few and so difficult," she said.

As England embarks on their Euro title defense, Bronze's experience, leadership, and unwavering desire to win will be crucial to their success. She sees the tough opening games not as a burden, but as an opportunity to rise to the occasion and make their campaign even more exciting.
