A day after a video surfaced showing Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) MLA Sanjay Gaikwad assaulting a canteen contractor in Mumbai, the legislator sparked further controversy with comments targeting South Indians. Gaikwad claimed that South Indians "run dance bars and ladies bars" and should not be awarded food supply contracts in Maharashtra. He argued that Marathi individuals should be given these contracts instead, as they understand local food preferences and would provide better quality food.
The incident that triggered this controversy involved Gaikwad physically assaulting a canteen contractor at the Akashwani MLA residence in Mumbai, allegedly for serving stale food. Video footage showed Gaikwad, clad in a vest and towel, forcing the contractor to smell a packet of dal before slapping and punching him. The contractor is seen collapsing to the floor as Gaikwad continues the assault. Following the incident, Gaikwad was heard boasting about teaching the contractor a lesson "apne style se (in my style)".
Defending his actions, Gaikwad stated that his "method may have been wrong, but the goal was right" and warned that he would repeat such behavior if similar issues arose. He further questioned why a contractor named Shetty was given the contract, suggesting it should have been awarded to a Marathi person. The canteen's license has since been suspended, and an investigation is underway.
Gaikwad's remarks have drawn condemnation from opposition parties and even within his own coalition. Critics have pointed out the lack of legal action against the MLA, with no FIR registered despite the assault being caught on camera. The incident has ignited a debate about law and order in Maharashtra and the potential misuse of power by elected officials.
In his defense, Gaikwad stated that he was not targeting all South Indians but those in business who operate dance bars, ladies bars, and hotels, claiming they have "spoiled the environment" and corrupted the youth of Maharashtra. He referenced Balasaheb Thackeray's past campaigns against such establishments and argued that these businesses should be stopped because they have "defamed our Maharashtra and ruined our culture". He also accused the "Shetty community" of establishing questionable businesses in Mumbai, particularly dance bars, which he claims have deteriorated the city's environment.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reportedly condemned Gaikwad's behavior. However, opposition parties are demanding more concrete action against the MLA, citing the need to uphold the rule of law and prevent the misuse of power. The controversy continues to unfold, raising questions about regional tensions, cultural identity, and the responsibilities of elected officials in Maharashtra.
