Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) captain Marquinhos has issued a rallying cry to his teammates, urging them to seize what he calls a "golden opportunity" in the upcoming Club World Cup final. The French powerhouse is set to face Chelsea in New York on Sunday, with a chance to secure an unprecedented quintuple.
Fresh off a dominant Champions League victory where they defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in May, PSG has already clinched three domestic trophies in the 2024-25 season, achieving a league and cup double. Marquinhos, a key figure in the team's defense, emphasized the significance of the Club World Cup final.
"We are very much aware of the importance of this match," Marquinhos stated. "It is a golden opportunity for us". He highlighted the unique nature of the tournament, which will now be held every four years, stressing the uncertainty of future opportunities. "This is a tournament that will be held every four years and we don't know if we will have another chance. We don't know what things will look like in four years," he added.
Marquinhos conveyed the team's determination to win the title and complete a historic season. "We want to grab this title to make it a perfect season which would be hard to replicate. We really want this title. We want to make history and are really hungry for a win," he affirmed.
PSG enters the final as strong favorites, especially after their commanding 4-0 victory over Real Madrid in the semi-final. However, Marquinhos cautioned against complacency, acknowledging Chelsea's unexpected journey to the final. He stressed that the final would be a unique contest, irrespective of prior results. "We have played good games but we should not fall into trap of talking about previous games," he said. "This final against Chelsea will have its own story. A lot will depend on what we do on the pitch".
While acknowledging the even playing field in a final, Marquinhos emphasized PSG's intent to play with aggression and an attacking mindset. "We have to see what Chelsea do and go about it the best way we can. As a final, regardless of previous results, it is 50-50 but we will play with aggression and an attacking mindset," he stated.
Marquinhos's leadership is crucial for PSG, especially considering the changes within the squad. Having been with the club for over a decade, he has witnessed the departure of key players like Neymar Jr., Kylian Mbappe, Marco Verratti and Keylor Navas. Now, he plays a vital role in nurturing new talents and maintaining the team's champion-worthy strength.
PSG's coach, Luis Enrique, is also a significant factor in the team's success. Marquinhos praised Enrique as one of the best coaches globally, highlighting his demanding nature, clear communication, and ability to bring something extra to the team. "He is certainly one of the best coaches in the world, and he shows that to us every day. He is a very demanding coach, very clear with the players, and he always brings something extra," he said.
As PSG stands on the brink of history, Marquinhos's call to seize the "golden opportunity" underscores the team's ambition and determination to conquer the Club World Cup.
