R. Madhavan Considers Leaving Romance Films After 'Aap Jaisa Koi,' Citing a "Last Chance" Feeling

R. Madhavan, the Indian actor known for his romantic roles, has hinted at potentially stepping away from the genre after his latest film, Aap Jaisa Koi. Citing a desire for more age-appropriate romances, the actor, who is 55 years old, may be looking to explore different avenues in his career.

Madhavan stars in Aap Jaisa Koi as Shrirenu Tripathi, a reserved middle-aged Sanskrit professor who finds an unlikely connection with Madhu Bose (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a spirited French instructor. The film, directed by Vivek Soni and produced by Karan Johar's Dharmatic Entertainment, explores themes of compatibility, interpersonal equality, and differing worldviews in romantic relationships. The film was released on Netflix on July 11, 2025.

While Aap Jaisa Koi has generated mixed reviews, many viewers have praised Madhavan and Shaikh's performances, as well as the film's fresh take on modern love and exploration of patriarchy. Some have described their chemistry as "unbelievably good". However, some critics felt that the film "drowns in too much talk" and ultimately doesn't live up to its potential.

Madhavan's contemplation of leaving romantic films comes at a time when he's reflecting on the evolving dynamics of on-screen romance. In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on what makes a romantic scene truly work, suggesting that married couples often struggle to portray the necessary desire for such roles. He believes that the spark is often missing when actors are already together, though he acknowledges that it might work if they are separated or no longer together.

The actor has also addressed the age-gap narrative, noting that cinema is reflecting the conversations happening in society. He drew a parallel between the age gap in Aap Jaisa Koi and the casting choices in the 90s, using Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla in Bol Radha Bol as an example. Madhavan sees it as a privilege to still be cast in romantic roles and appreciates the opportunity to perform without forcing youthful energy or altering his natural demeanor.

Born on June 1, 1970, in Jamshedpur, India, Ranganathan Madhavan, also known as Maddy, has had a successful career in both Hindi and Tamil cinema. Before entering the film industry, he appeared in television serials such as Banegi Apni Baat. He gained recognition for his roles in films like Alaipayuthey, Rang De Basanti, and 3 Idiots. Madhavan took a break from acting for eight months in 2010 to treat a knee injury and spend time with his family.

Whether or not Madhavan decides to fully step away from romantic roles remains to be seen. However, his recent comments suggest a desire to explore new artistic challenges and perhaps redefine his image on screen.
