The tragic murder of Radhika Yadav, a 25-year-old national-level tennis player, by her father, Deepak Yadav, has exposed a family's struggle with societal pressures and a father's deteriorating mental state. Investigations reveal that Radhika, in a heartbreaking attempt to reason with her father, reminded him of the significant investment he had made in her career, saying, "You spent Rs 2.5 crore on me, have faith".
Deepak Yadav, now in police custody, reportedly confessed to the crime, citing the constant taunts from villagers regarding his dependence on his daughter's income as the primary motive. According to the FIR, Deepak told police that people questioned Radhika's character and made remarks about him living off her earnings when he visited Wazirabad village. This constant badgering reportedly led him to ask Radhika to shut down her tennis academy, a request she refused.
Radhika's refusal to close the academy, which she had established after an injury curtailed her tennis career, seems to have been a major flashpoint. Deepak had even offered to compensate her for any financial losses incurred by the closure, but she remained steadfast in her decision. She had pointed out the academy made sense because he gave her ₹2 crore to help her start it.
The investigation further revealed that Deepak's mental state had been declining for about two weeks before the incident. He had become increasingly withdrawn, restless, and had trouble sleeping. Sources indicate that he was disturbed and hadn't slept for 15 days due to the taunts. Three days before the shooting, an argument escalated to the point where Deepak threatened to kill either himself or Radhika if she didn't comply with his demands.
The police are still investigating all angles. Initial reports suggested that Deepak was unhappy with Radhika running the tennis academy. Police also revealed that Deepak objected to a music video featuring Radhika and an independent artist and that they had argued over it. However, police sources have since ruled out any connection between the video and the murder.
On the day of the murder, Deepak Yadav allegedly used his licensed .32 bore revolver to shoot Radhika in the back while she was preparing food in the kitchen. She sustained three bullet wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where she was declared dead. The victim's mother, Manju Yadav, was home at the time but claimed to have been unwell and locked in a room, and thus did not witness the event.
Radhika Yadav was a promising tennis player who had represented India in international tournaments and achieved significant rankings. After her career was cut short by injury, she dedicated herself to coaching and mentoring young players at her academy. Those close to the family remember Deepak as wholeheartedly supportive of Radhika's dream of playing tennis.
The court has remanded Deepak Yadav to police custody, calling it a "serious matter" requiring an "in-depth" probe.
