The Kolkata gangrape case continues to dominate headlines as investigations intensify. A 24-year-old law student reported being gang-raped at the South Calcutta Law College campus on June 25. CCTV footage has emerged, reportedly confirming the victim's allegations and showing her being dragged from the gate to the college premises. The footage allegedly shows the movements of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim.
So far, four individuals have been arrested, including the prime accused, Monojit Mishra, an alumnus of the college and former Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad leader, along with Promit Mukherjee, Zaid Ahmed, and Pinaki Banerjee, the college's security guard. Mishra is described as a history-sheeter with several cases against him. The accused have been remanded to police custody.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident, now comprising nine members. The SIT has seized the clothes worn by the prime accused during the crime. Medical reports confirm the survivor's allegations, revealing evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches on her body. Police suspect the motive behind the crime may be the victim's rejection of a marriage proposal from the prime accused.
Members of the National Commission for Women (NCW) have visited the college, alleging that attempts were made to conceal information and that the police weren't fully cooperating. The BJP has organized protests against the gangrape, accusing the state government of failing to ensure campus safety. Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra has received a show-cause notice from his party following his remarks about the survivor. The incident has drawn comparisons to a similar case at RG Kar Medical College.
The sudden death of actress Shefali Jariwala, best known for her "Kaanta Laga" appearance, has shocked the entertainment industry. She passed away on June 27 at the age of 42. She was declared dead on arrival at Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in Andheri. While initial reports suggested a possible cardiac arrest, the exact cause of death remains inconclusive pending forensic analysis. Doctors suspect a sudden drop in blood pressure may have contributed to her death.
Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and have stated that no foul play is suspected. Authorities are awaiting postmortem and lab reports to confirm the cause of death. Statements have been taken from her husband, Parag Tyagi, family members, household staff, and medical experts.
Investigations have revealed that Jariwala had been undergoing anti-aging treatments and had taken her usual injection on the day of her death, despite fasting for a religious ceremony. Police found anti-aging tablets, skin glow tablets, and vitamin tablets at her residence. Her final rites were performed at Oshiwara Hindu crematorium. Several celebrities have expressed their grief and paid tribute to her on social media. Filmmaker Vinay Sapru has announced that "Kaanta Laga" will be retired as it now solely belongs to Shefali.
