The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has temporarily suspended the license of Pune's renowned Cafe Goodluck following a disturbing incident where glass pieces were allegedly found in a bun served at the eatery. The action was taken after a video showing the glass fragments in the food item went viral on social media, sparking public outrage and raising serious concerns about hygiene standards at the popular cafe.
The incident came to light when a couple, Aakash Jalagi and his wife, visited Cafe Goodluck, located on Fergusson College Road, for breakfast. They ordered the cafe's famous "bun maska". While eating, Jalagi's wife discovered a piece of glass embedded in the bun. Initially, she thought it was ice, but upon closer inspection, they realized it was a shard of glass. Jalagi immediately alerted the cafe staff.
Jalagi and his wife were understandably alarmed by the discovery, pointing out the potential for serious injury had the glass been ingested. Jalagi recorded a video of the incident and shared it on social media, which quickly went viral. The video prompted widespread concern among the cafe's patrons and the general public, leading to increased scrutiny of food safety practices at the establishment.
Following the social media uproar, the FDA took cognizance of the incident and launched an investigation. FDA Joint Commissioner Suresh Annapure stated that the FDA inspected the cafe and found unhygienic conditions. As a result, the FDA has temporarily suspended Cafe Goodluck's license until further notice and until the cafe complies with all necessary hygiene and safety standards. Food samples from the cafe have been collected and sent for testing. The FDA will determine further action based on the test results and any potential food safety violations.
In response to the incident, the management of Cafe Goodluck stated that the bun maska is sourced from an external vendor and that they have raised the issue with the supplier. However, this explanation has been met with criticism from customers and food safety advocates, who argue that the cafe cannot absolve itself of responsibility for ensuring the quality and safety of the food it serves. Critics emphasize that outsourcing does not excuse the cafe from maintaining rigorous quality control measures.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation about food safety and hygiene standards in Pune's food establishments. It has also led to calls for stricter enforcement of food safety regulations to protect public health. In a separate incident, a customer found a cockroach in soup served at a different Pune hotel. The FDA is also investigating this incident.
