Tesla is poised to officially enter the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025. The showroom is located in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a posh financial district in Mumbai. This marks a significant step for the American EV manufacturer in one of the world's fastest-growing electric vehicle markets.
The Tesla Model Y is expected to be the first model offered in India. Industry experts estimate the price to range between ₹50 lakh and ₹75 lakh (ex-showroom). However, recent reports indicate a starting price of ₹60 lakh for the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant and ₹68 lakh for the long-range RWD version. These prices reflect a substantial premium compared to other markets due to a 70% basic import duty. For comparison, the Model Y starts at $44,990 in the United States, 263,500 yuan in China, and €45,970 in Germany.
Tesla is offering two variants to Indian buyers:
These prices are for outright cash purchases, with lease or financing options not yet listed.
Tesla is importing Model Y units as Completely Built Units (CBU) from its Gigafactory in Shanghai. While initial reports suggested a 70% import duty, the actual tariff structure is more complex. Fully imported cars attract a duty, significantly increasing the final price for Indian consumers. Despite the Indian government's efforts to incentivize local manufacturing with a new EV policy and reduced tariffs, Tesla has opted for imports.
The Model Y boasts Tesla's signature minimalist design, featuring a sloping, coupe-like silhouette with full LED lighting and connected taillamps. Key expected features and specifications include:
The Tesla Model Y will compete in the premium EV segment, targeting models like the BMW iX1 and Kia EV6. Other potential competitors include the BMW 5 Series, BMW i4, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz EQB, and Jaguar F-Pace.
The Mumbai showroom will serve as an experience center. Customers can explore Tesla vehicles, book test drives, customize cars, and place orders. The showroom occupies a 4,000 sq ft space in the Maker Maxity complex.
Tesla has also leased a 24,565 sq ft warehouse space in Mumbai's Kurla area for use as a service center. The company has initiated homologation for the Model Y in India. Deliveries are expected to begin in August.
