A Karachi-based drama group, Mauj, is receiving widespread acclaim for its innovative adaptation of the Hindu epic Ramayana, staged at the Karachi Arts Council. The performance incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) enhancements to enrich the storytelling and offer a modern twist on the classic tale. The play ran until July 13th, 2025.

Directed by Yoheshwar Karera, the production has been lauded for its compelling execution, the performers' convincing portrayals, dynamic lighting, live music, and colorful costumes. Karera expressed his satisfaction with the play's reception, emphasizing that it reflects Pakistan's evolving and tolerant society. He added that he did not anticipate any negative reactions or security concerns regarding the staging of the religious text.

The use of AI and other technological innovations has added a fresh dimension to the timeless narrative, making it more accessible to contemporary audiences. The official Instagram page of the School Of Visual & Performing Arts shared photos from the play, highlighting the collaboration between Mauj and SOVAPA.

Critics have largely praised the group's efforts, with art and film critic Omair Alavi commending the narrative as "top class," noting that the Ramayana is a story that resonates with millions globally. He also praised the production's authentic approach, highlighting the use of lighting effects, a live musical score, elaborate costumes, and detailed set design. This sentiment underscores the production's cultural depth and artistic ambition.

Producer Rana Kazmi, who also plays the role of Sita, shared her fascination with transforming the epic into an immersive experience. Her performance, along with the ensemble cast, has been a crucial factor in the production's success.

This adaptation marks a significant cultural event in Karachi, underscoring the role of theatre in fostering dialogue and appreciation among varied cultural and religious backgrounds. The Karachi Arts Council's support plays a pivotal role in this ongoing cultural narrative. The continued interest in the play highlights the importance of such platforms in promoting cultural dialogue and understanding.
