The climax scene of the 2007 blockbuster Om Shanti Om, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, is remembered for its scale and the daring practical effects employed. The scene involved a massive set engulfed in flames, with approximately 100 people present, including the lead actors, camera crew, and action unit members.
Action director Sham Kaushal has spoken about the challenges and anxieties of filming the sequence. The scene required Shah Rukh Khan's character, Om, to enter a burning film set created by Arjun Rampal's Mukesh, in an attempt to save Shantipriya, played by Deepika Padukone. Kaushal revealed that the lack of advanced VFX technology at the time meant the fire had to be real, making it a high-risk endeavor.
According to Kaushal, the set was located in Mumbai's Film City and was designed to be engulfed in flames. He recalled the pressure he felt, knowing that the safety of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, three camera operators, and 60 members of his action unit depended on him. In a recent interview, Kaushal confessed that the situation was so fraught with risk that he was brought to tears on several occasions during filming. He described the Om Shanti Om set piece as one of the most difficult and "testing" experiences of his career.
The action director recounted feeling like he was having a heart attack while executing the fire scene. He was constantly aware of the potential for accidents and the responsibility he carried for the well-being of the cast and crew. The grand fire sequence remains a memorable action set piece in Hindi cinema.
