An Air India Express flight from Muscat to Mumbai experienced an extraordinary event on Thursday, July 24, 2025, when a Thai woman gave birth to a baby boy mid-air. The airline's cabin crew, along with a nurse who happened to be on board, assisted in the delivery.
According to a statement from Air India Express, the cabin crew responded swiftly when the woman went into labor. Drawing upon their emergency training, they created a secure and compassionate environment for the birth. The pilots were immediately alerted and promptly contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) to request a priority landing in Mumbai.
Upon arrival in Mumbai, medical teams and an ambulance were on standby to provide immediate medical assistance to the mother and her newborn. Both were immediately transferred to a nearby hospital for further care. A female airline staff member accompanied them to ensure continued support throughout the process.
Air India Express lauded the coordinated efforts of its crew and the medical responders, calling the event "a testament to the preparedness and compassion of our crew". The airline also acknowledged the assistance of senior cabin crew Sneha Naga, along with flight attendants Aishwarya Shirke, Asiya Khalid, and Muskan Chauhan, as well as the pilots, Capt Ashish Vaghani and Capt Faraz Ahmed.
The airline has been in contact with the Consulate General of Thailand in Mumbai to facilitate the mother's journey back home. However, the unscheduled birth has disrupted the mother's original travel plans, as she had been traveling with her one-year-old infant from Muscat to Bangkok via Mumbai. The newborn will require travel documents, including an Indian visa, and the trio will need to remain in Mumbai for at least a week due to airline regulations regarding the minimum age for newborns to fly.
Details regarding the number of passengers on board the flight have not been disclosed.
