Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has voiced concerns regarding the whereabouts of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, who resigned from his position on July 22, 2025, citing health reasons. Sibal has noted Dhankhar's absence from public view and his lack of communication since his resignation.

Sibal stated that he has been unable to contact Dhankhar since his resignation and that even Dhankhar's friends and family have not had any news from him. Sibal also mentioned that Dhankhar is not at his official residence. He said that when he tried to contact Dhankhar, his personal secretary said that he was resting.

Referencing the film "Laapataa Ladies," Sibal quipped that he had heard of 'Laapataa Ladies' but never of a 'laapataa vice president'. He then questioned whether a habeas corpus petition should be filed. Sibal urged Home Minister Amit Shah to issue a statement on Dhankhar's whereabouts, emphasizing the need for transparency. He also questioned Dhankhar's safety and why he is incommunicado.

Sibal emphasized his personal concern for Dhankhar, noting their good relationship and past collaboration as lawyers. He stated that it would be unfortunate to have to file an FIR or a habeas corpus petition. He also took a swipe at the government, saying that Dhankhar supported the government throughout his tenure as Vice President, but now the opposition may have to protect him.

Sibal acknowledged that the Vice Presidential election is in September and expressed hope that they could meet Dhankhar before then. He stressed the importance of knowing if Dhankhar is healthy and noted that such a situation is unprecedented in India's history.

The situation has sparked political tensions, with Sibal's statements potentially increasing friction between the opposition and the government. Dhankhar's absence has become a question of security and transparency. As of August 9, 2025, neither the government nor any official source has offered clarification on Dhankhar's absence.
