Following the tragic plane crash in Russia's Far East on July 24, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his profound sadness and conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims. The crash of the Antonov An-24 aircraft resulted in the loss of all 49 people on board.
In a message shared on social media platform X, PM Modi stated, "Deeply saddened at the loss of lives in the tragic plane crash in Russia. Extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. We stand in solidarity with Russia and its people". This expression of solidarity underscores the close ties between India and Russia during this difficult time.
The Antonov An-24, a Soviet-era aircraft operated by Angara Airlines based in Siberia, was en route from Khabarovsk to Blagoveshchensk and Tynda, near the Russian-Chinese border. The aircraft disappeared from radar as it approached Tynda. A search and rescue helicopter located the wreckage on a mountain slope approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) from Tynda. The Amur Center for Civil Defence and Fire Safety reported that no survivors were found at the crash site.
Amur region Governor Vasily Orlov called the crash a "terrible tragedy". Initial reports suggest that a crew error during landing, potentially exacerbated by adverse weather conditions, may have contributed to the crash. Russian authorities have launched an investigation to determine the definitive cause of the accident. The challenging terrain of the dense forest hindered initial response efforts.
This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of aging aircraft within Russia's regional fleets, a matter previously highlighted by incidents such as the 2011 An-24 crash in Tomsk. The Antonov An-24 is nearly 50 years old.
