Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has recently been involved in several court appearances related to various cases. These cases range from alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct during past elections to defamation complaints filed by political opponents.
Defamation Case Filed by BJP Leader In August 2024, a Hyderabad court issued a notice to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy in response to a criminal defamation complaint filed by Kasam Venkateshwarlu, the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) State General Secretary. The complaint stemmed from allegations that Revanth Reddy made false and baseless accusations against the BJP during a Lok Sabha election meeting on May 4 in Kothagudem. Venkateshwarlu claimed that Reddy stated the BJP would abolish reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Backward Classes if the party were to come to power again in 2024. The BJP leader argued that these statements were misleading, false, and defamed the party and its workers, harming the party's reputation among voters. The court, after examining statements and materials, found that a prima facie case was made out against Revanth Reddy under Sections 499 (defamation) and 125 of the Peoples Representation Act. Summons were issued, requiring Reddy to appear before the court on September 25.
In late April 2025, the Telangana High Court granted Revanth Reddy relief from personal appearance in the defamation case. However, in June 2025, the High Court stayed the criminal proceedings against Revanth Reddy until June 23, in relation to the alleged defamatory remarks against the BJP and Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 2024 parliamentary elections campaign. Reddy had reportedly accused the BJP of planning to abolish reservations if voted to power and allegedly displayed a morphed video of Amit Shah. The BJP maintained that the remarks and visuals damaged the party's image.
Cases Related to Model Code of Conduct Violations and Remarks Against Police In February 2025, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy appeared before a special court in Hyderabad concerning multiple cases, including alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct during past elections. The court had previously issued summons to Reddy and others related to cases registered at various police stations, including those involving poll code violations and certain remarks made against the police. During the proceedings, Reddy denied the allegations and opted for trials in the cases, with the court scheduling hearings on different dates.
In May 2025, Revanth Reddy again appeared before the Special Court for People's Representatives in Nampally regarding cases filed against him for alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct during the last Assembly elections. These cases dated back to his tenure as the President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) and involved FIRs registered at various police stations over his remarks regarding reservation policies during campaign events. Reddy told the judge that the allegations were politically motivated and based on false premises, maintaining that he had not committed any illegal act and calling the FIRs "baseless and vindictive".
Separately, Revanth Reddy appeared before a special court in May 2025 in connection with a case registered against him in 2023 for allegedly making derogatory remarks against police personnel when he was the Congress president in the state. He denied the allegations and preferred a trial in the case, and the court posted the case for judgment to June 12.
