India's batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will bat on Day 5 of the crucial fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. This announcement comes as a significant boost for the Indian team, who are looking to save the match and keep the series alive, despite Pant's toe fracture sustained on Day 1.

Pant's injury occurred when he was struck on the toe by a Chris Woakes delivery during India's first innings. The impact was severe enough to sideline him from his wicket-keeping duties, with Dhruv Jurel stepping in as a replacement. Scans revealed that Pant suffered a fractured metatarsal bone in his right foot, typically requiring 6-8 weeks of recovery in a protective boot.

Despite the injury and initial concerns about his availability, Pant defied expectations by returning to bat on Day 2, scoring a brisk half-century. His resilience and commitment to the team were evident as he braved the pain to contribute with the bat.

Kotak's confirmation that Pant will bat on Day 5 indicates the importance of his contribution to India's chances of salvaging a draw. India finished Day 4 at 174/2, trailing England by 137 runs. KL Rahul (87) and Shubman Gill (78) were at the crease, having forged an unbeaten 174-run stand for the third wicket after India lost their openers early.

Kotak emphasized the need for the batsmen to play each ball on its merit and avoid unnecessary risks on the final day. He stressed the importance of not being pre-planned and minimizing undue risks, stating that if the batsmen are well-set, the only way they can get out is if the ball behaves unexpectedly or if they encounter a brilliant delivery. He also said that the players have the quality and ability to replicate their Day 4 performance on Day 5.

Pant's batting position is likely to be at No. 5 or 6, and his ability to bat through the pain could prove vital for India. The team is already grappling with a growing injury list, with frontline pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep ruled out of the Test.

The possible absence of Ben Stokes from England's bowling attack due to fitness concerns could further influence the game. Kotak's statement and Pant's potential contribution has instilled a sense of optimism within the Indian camp as they face a challenging Day 5 at Old Trafford.
