eToro Group Ltd. has announced its plans to tokenize 100 of the most popular US-listed stocks and ETFs on the Ethereum blockchain. This move will allow users to trade these tokenized stocks 24/7 and transfer them between eToro digital wallets. The company will issue these assets as ERC20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain.
The rollout is expected to begin in Europe. Once live, users will be able to trade tokenized shares around the clock and transfer them between eToro digital wallets. eToro also plans to offer 24/5 trading with an initial list of 100 US-listed stocks and ETFs.
Yoni Assia, eToro's co-founder and CEO, stated that this initiative marks "the beginning of digital assets and tokenized real-world assets". He expressed excitement about the convergence of eToro's crypto wallet with the world of stock trading.
eToro began offering cryptocurrencies to US users in 2019 and currently supports over 50 digital assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Stellar, and Cardano. In the same year, the company launched tokenized gold and silver for its customers. eToro has also partnered with CME Group to offer spot-quoted futures, which are currently available in select European markets, with plans for further global expansion.
This move by eToro follows a similar announcement by Robinhood Markets Inc., which also intends to make tokenized US securities available to its European customers.
The tokenization initiative builds on eToro's previous ventures, including the launch of tokenized gold (GOLDX) and silver (SLVX) in 2019 after acquiring Danish token startup Firmo. Assia stated that the company's goal is to eventually tokenize every asset on eToro, starting with stocks, enabling users to move tokenized assets onto the blockchain and integrate them into the broader decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.
eToro's decision to tokenize stocks is influenced by recent regulatory developments, including MiCA in Europe and the GENIUS Act in the U.S., which create new opportunities for the tokenization of real-world assets.
The launch will feature 100 top US-listed stocks and ETFs, tokenized as ERC‑20 assets on Ethereum and backed 1:1 by traditional shares held by eToro. Users will be able to redeem tokenized stocks for underlying positions on eToro and vice versa.
Assia said that tokenization brings 24/7 accessibility and that their mission has always been to open the global markets. He added that tokenization removes boundaries, providing transparency and control, and has the potential to democratize finance by making assets more accessible.
With this step, eToro is also expanding the number of crypto assets available in the United States, now exceeding 100.
