During a Rajya Sabha debate on "Operation Sindoor," Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan rebuked Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi with the words, "Priyanka, don't control me". The incident occurred while Bachchan was questioning the naming of the operation and criticizing the government's handling of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Bachchan began her speech by expressing condolences to the families of the 26 victims who were killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. She then questioned the government's choice to name the counterstrike operation "Operation Sindoor," asking why it was named so when the attack had "destroyed the sindoor" of so many women. "Sindoor toh ujad gaya (sindoor was destroyed), the wives of those who were killed," she stated.
As Bachchan spoke, she was interrupted by MPs from the ruling party. Addressing the treasury benches, she retorted, "Either you speak or I will speak. When you speak, I don't interrupt. When a woman speaks, I never interrupt. So please mind your tongue". BJP MP Surendra Singh Nagar, who was presiding over the House, interjected, asking Bachchan to address the Chair so that her words would be on record.
It was at this point that Priyanka Chaturvedi, who was seated next to Bachchan, appeared to attempt to calm her down. Bachchan responded to Chaturvedi with, "Priyanka, don't control me," which elicited laughter from Chaturvedi and others in the House.
Bachchan continued her criticism, referencing the government's promises following the abrogation of Article 370. "After the abrogation of Article 370, I saw people proudly saying terrorism will end. 'We promise you.' What happened?" she questioned. She argued that the victims of the Pahalgam attack had gone to Kashmir trusting those promises.
Bachchan also stated, that she would not make remarks to provoke a BJP-Congress fight. She urged leaders to be humble, kind, and protective towards the people who have given them their positions and authority. She said that leaders should protect them, and if necessary, apologize.
Bachchan's remarks about Operation Sindoor's name drew criticism from the BJP, who defended the name as symbolic of strength.
