Luton Town secured a narrow 1-0 victory against AFC Wimbledon in their League One opener, thanks to a late own goal by Wimbledon defender Ryan Johnson. The match, played at Kenilworth Road, marked Luton's return to League One following back-to-back relegations.

The game was a hard-fought contest, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. Luton, under the management of Matt Bloomfield, appeared to be far from the team that played in the Premier League just 15 months prior. AFC Wimbledon, fresh off their League Two play-off final victory, proved to be a resilient opponent, effectively containing Luton for much of the match.

The first half saw very few opportunities for either side, with only two off-target shots between them. One of these shots landed on the roof of the Oak Stand behind the Wimbledon goal. The visitors' defender, Joe Lewis, was perhaps fortunate to only receive a yellow card for a foul on Luton debutant Nahki Wells, who had a clear run on goal.

In the second half, Luton began to show more attacking intent. Reuell Walters forced an excellent save from Wimbledon goalkeeper Nathan Bishop with a drilled half-volley from range after 63 minutes. However, Wimbledon continued to defend resolutely and looked set to earn a point.

The decisive moment came with just five minutes remaining. A hopeful ball forward by Nahki Wells towards Cauley Woodrow was met by Ryan Johnson, whose header looped over his own goalkeeper and in off the underside of the crossbar. Johnson's unfortunate own goal gave Luton a late and somewhat fortunate lead.

Matt Bloomfield acknowledged that his team is still a work in progress. He stated that while he was pleased with the win, there is a desire for improvement in the final third of the pitch. He also noted the need for greater clinical finishing.
