Goalkeeper Matt Turner is set to make a return to Major League Soccer, rejoining the New England Revolution on loan from Olympique Lyonnais of France's Ligue 1. The loan is effective through June 30, 2026 and includes an option for the Revolution to purchase Turner's contract.

Turner will occupy a Designated Player slot on New England's roster for the remainder of the 2025 MLS season, then become eligible for Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) in 2026. He is expected to begin training with the Revolution next week and could be available for the team's match on August 9 against D.C. United. The team plans to formally re-introduce Turner at the Revolution Training Center in Foxboro on Monday morning.

Turner expressed his excitement about returning to the club where his professional career began. He acknowledged the Revolution's role in his development and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he and his family have received from Revolution supporters. He looks forward to the opportunity to compete again for the Revolution and aims to contribute to the team's success.

Sporting Director Curt Onalfo said the club acted quickly when the opportunity arose to bring Turner back to the Revolution. Onalfo believes Turner's talent and leadership will strengthen the squad both now and in the future. Head coach Caleb Porter is also looking forward to working with Turner, acknowledging the high standards Turner sets for himself, which have led to success at the international level, in Europe, and in MLS.

Prior to his move to Europe, Turner spent seven seasons with the New England Revolution, joining the club in 2016 as an undrafted free agent out of Fairfield University. During his time in MLS, Turner made 108 regular season starts and recorded 23 clean sheets. In 2021, he was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and earned MLS Best XI honors, also winning the MLS All-Star Game MVP Award. That same year, he helped lead New England to the club's first Supporters' Shield title.

Following his success in MLS, Turner moved to Arsenal in 2022. However, he struggled to find consistent playing time, making only seven appearances before being transferred to Nottingham Forest and then loaned to Crystal Palace. His move to Lyon this summer was complicated by the club's financial issues, which led to attempts to cancel the transfer.

Turner's return to MLS comes at a crucial time in his career, as he seeks to regain his form and compete for the starting goalkeeper position with the U.S. Men's National Team. He served as the USMNT's starting goalkeeper at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, earning 52 caps with the national team and helping the team win three CONCACAF titles. However, he recently lost his starting role to Matt Freese. National team coach Mauricio Pochettino has emphasized the importance of Turner finding consistent playing time to compete at the international level.

The Revolution are currently 11th in the Eastern Conference and are looking to improve their position in the standings. Turner's return is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's defense and overall competitiveness.
