Delhi is bracing for a wet Independence Day as heavier showers are predicted over the long weekend. While the capital experienced a refreshing spell of rain offering respite from the heat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the rainfall will intensify from August 14 to August 17, potentially disrupting Independence Day celebrations.
The IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with occasional very light to light rain or thundershowers in some areas of Delhi from August 13 to August 16. For Independence Day, August 15, Delhi is expected to remain cloudy, with no heavy rain warnings issued. Light showers are likely in the morning, and temperatures may range between 31°C and 33°C during the day and 22°C and 24°C at night. This suggests that Independence Day festivities in the capital may unfold under overcast skies.
Forecast data indicates a significant shift in Delhi's weather pattern beginning August 14, with an 84% chance of moderate rain and approximately 8.32 mm of precipitation expected. The intensity is set to increase on August 15 and 16, with rainfall projections of 15.58 mm and 10.34 mm respectively. High humidity levels, peaking at 80% on August 17, are expected to accompany these wet conditions, potentially causing discomfort despite cooler temperatures. The wet weather will continue into August 17 with around 10.25 mm of rain. A gradual decline in rainfall is forecast for August 18 and 19, though scattered showers are still possible. Daytime temperatures are likely to range between 26°C and 36.2°C.
Neighboring areas like Gurugram and Faridabad have been issued a rain alert for August 15, with predictions of heavy showers in several areas. South Delhi regions near Faridabad may experience light drizzle. In contrast, Noida and Ghaziabad are unlikely to see rainfall on August 15; however, the sky in both cities will remain cloudy on Independence Day.
The monsoon trough is expected to pass directly through the Delhi region between August 14–16, intensifying rainfall before shifting south after August 17, leading to reduced precipitation.
Residents of Delhi should be prepared for waterlogging in certain areas due to the predicted rainfall. Commuters should carry umbrellas as short spells of rain are expected throughout the day.
Despite the likelihood of rain, the celebrations are expected to proceed without diminishing the morale, spirit, or excitement of the occasion. The grand ceremony at the Red Fort is expected to proceed with passion and fervor, irrespective of weather challenges.
