Amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, Israel has offered to assist in the evacuation of Indian citizens who wish to leave the region. This commitment comes as the conflict intensifies, raising concerns for the safety and well-being of Indian nationals residing in both countries.
Reuven Azar, Israel's Ambassador to India, stated that Israel is coordinating closely with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to facilitate the evacuation process. He noted that plans are underway through Israel's Ministry of Transport to organize evacuation commutes for diplomats and foreign citizens who desire to leave. Several options are being considered, including both land and maritime routes, with ongoing discussions between Israeli and Indian authorities to determine the most efficient and secure methods.
Currently, land routes via the Allenby Bridge/King Hussein Bridge to Jordan and the Eilat-Taba border crossing to Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt remain open. Another potential option involves cruise ships departing from Israeli ports at Haifa and Ashdod to Cyprus.
India has not yet announced a formal evacuation plan for its citizens in either Israel or Iran. However, the government is advising Indian nationals to relocate away from major cities that are likely to bear the brunt of military actions. The Indian Embassy in Tehran has established a 24/7 emergency helpline, while the MEA has also set up a 24/7 control room to assist Indian nationals in both countries.
Earlier, India requested Iran to facilitate the safe evacuation of Indian students stuck in cities that have been affected by Israeli bombings. While Iranian airspace is currently closed, the Iranian government has stated that all land borders are open for the safe passage of Indian nationals.
As of June 17, 2025, 110 Indian students, primarily from Jammu and Kashmir, have been successfully evacuated from Tehran to Armenia. These students will then be transported to Delhi via a special flight. The evacuation process involved transporting citizens from various Iranian cities to safer locations near the Armenian border by bus.
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has confirmed that all 110 evacuees who crossed into Armenia have been accounted for and accommodated in hotels in Yerevan. Armenian authorities have been providing support by facilitating border crossings and offering temporary shelter. Additional evacuations are anticipated in the coming days.
With official buses operating at full capacity and limited transportation options, some individuals are struggling to arrange taxis amidst fuel shortages and rising costs. Families in India are anxiously awaiting news and hoping for the safe return of their loved ones.
The situation remains dynamic, and both the Indian and Israeli governments are working to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals in the region.
