Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his address to the nation on the 79th Independence Day from the Red Fort, lauded the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as it approaches its centenary. He described the RSS's century of service to the nation as a "proud, golden chapter". Modi, who himself has a long association with the RSS, having been a 'pracharak' (promoter) in the past, emphasized the organization's dedication to nation-building and welfare.
Modi highlighted the RSS's commitment to "vyakti nirman se rashtra nirman," which translates to "nation-building through individual development". He acknowledged the countless "swayamsevaks" (volunteers) who have dedicated their lives to the welfare of the nation. Modi stated that the nation is built not just by the government or those in power, but by the collective efforts of numerous individuals and organizations.
The Prime Minister also referred to the RSS as the "world's biggest NGO," praising its service, dedication, organization, and unparalleled discipline. He conveyed the country's pride in the RSS's century-long journey and expressed confidence that it would continue to inspire.
The RSS, founded in 1925 by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, is a Hindu nationalist organization that promotes the ideology of Hindutva. This ideology posits that India is the "fatherland" and "holy land" of Hindus. The organization has grown to have a significant presence across India, with a vast network of "shakhas" (branches) that conduct daily activities. According to reports, the RSS organizes more than 83,000 'shakhas' daily at over 51,000 locations, along with weekly and monthly gatherings.
Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the RSS, also commemorated Independence Day by hoisting the national flag and describing India as a unique nation with a mission to bring peace and happiness to the world by sharing its Dharma globally.
Modi's remarks have been interpreted in several ways. Some view it as an acknowledgment of the RSS's contribution to Indian society, particularly its work during emergencies, natural calamities, and rural development. The RSS's Seva Bharati organization, for instance, ran numerous relief camps during the Covid-19 pandemic. Others see it as a reaffirmation of the RSS's deep ideological influence on the ruling BJP, especially after recent murmurs of strain in the relationship between the two. Some reports suggest the RSS is seeking further changes within the BJP's structure and governmental operations.
However, the Prime Minister's praise has also drawn criticism. Some view it as an attempt to appease the RSS. Opposition parties have criticized Modi's commendation of the RSS, particularly in light of the organization's historical stances and alleged lack of participation in the Indian independence movement. It's also worth noting that the RSS has been associated with Hindu extremism and religious violence by some.
