Pakistan Legend Doubts Hesson's Coaching Abilities Following West Indies Debacle: Questioning His Qualifications and Impact.

Pakistan's recent ODI series defeat against the West Indies has sparked criticism, with former players questioning the credentials of head coach Mike Hesson. The series concluded with a disastrous batting performance, as Pakistan were bowled out for a mere 92 runs in the final match. This led to a 202-run defeat and the first ODI series loss to the West Indies since 1991.

The defeat has prompted strong reactions from former cricketers, with Shoaib Akhtar leading the charge against Hesson's appointment. Akhtar questioned Hesson's suitability for the ODI format, suggesting his expertise lies more in T20 cricket. "Mike Hesson is a good T20 coach, but I don't know what qualities he has for ODIs," Akhtar stated, emphasizing the need for quality players in the 50-over format. He argued that Pakistan's failures stem from flawed policies rather than individual player shortcomings, and that the team's batting frailties are exposed on pitches offering pace and movement.

Other former players have echoed Akhtar's sentiments. Basit Ali criticized Hesson for making unnecessary changes to the playing XI, disrupting team cohesion and player morale. Ali suggested that Hesson should focus on assisting Pakistan cricket rather than acting like a "father figure" who constantly alters the lineup. Tanvir Ahmed also held Hesson responsible for the series defeat, citing poor planning in the crucial third match.

The batting collapse in the final ODI was particularly alarming. Pakistan's top order disintegrated within the first three overs, with openers Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, and captain Mohammad Rizwan all dismissed for ducks. Babar Azam managed only 9 runs, and the innings ended in just 29.2 overs. Jayden Seales of the West Indies wreaked havoc, taking 6 wickets for 18 runs.

The loss has raised concerns about Pakistan's preparation for the upcoming Asia Cup, although some believe that Pakistan's prospects for the Asia Cup are less bleak, as the tournament will be played in the T20 format, a format in which Pakistan has demonstrated stronger performance. However, Basit Ali expressed concerns about Pakistan's chances against India in the Asia Cup, stating, "They will beat us so badly you can't even imagine".

Mike Hesson was appointed as the head coach for Pakistan's white-ball formats in May 2025, replacing Gary Kirsten. Hesson's tenure began on May 26, 2025. Prior to his appointment, Hesson had served as the head coach of New Zealand and Kenya, and he was also the head coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed confidence in Hesson's ability to guide Pakistan cricket, citing his wealth of international experience and proven track record. However, following the recent defeat against the West Indies, Hesson's credentials have come under scrutiny, with former players questioning his strategies and decision-making.
