In a historic moment for Indian cinema, the teaser of "Devi Chowdhurani," starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, illuminated the screens of Times Square in New York City on August 15, 2025, coinciding with India's 79th Independence Day. This marks a first for an Indian film, showcasing the epic retelling of the story of India's first female freedom fighter on a global stage.
The film features Prosenjit Chatterjee as Bhavani Pathak, a legendary rebel, and Srabanti Chatterjee in the titular role of Devi Chowdhurani. The teaser's launch on August 13, 2025, had already generated considerable buzz due to its breathtaking visuals, powerful performances, and revolutionary spirit.
Prosenjit Chatterjee has called "Devi Chowdhurani" a part of India's cultural conscience. He expressed his honor in being part of a project that brings Bengal's legacy to a global stage, especially when regional stories are gaining international recognition.
"Devi Chowdhurani" is directed by National Award-winner Subhrajit Mitra and is based on Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay's iconic novel. The film narrates the story of India's first female freedom fighter with significant scale, soul, and cinematic ambition.
Notably, "Devi Chowdhurani" is the first Indian film to receive official Indo-UK co-production recognition. The film is supported by cultural bodies such as India's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, NFDC, FFO, Invest India, and the UK's British Film Institute (BFI).
The film also features Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Darshana Banik, Bibriti Chatterjee, and Arjun Chakraborty. Currently in post-production, it boasts a powerful score by Grammy-nominated composer Pandit Bickram Ghosh. Aparna and Aniruddha Dasgupta (Adited Motion Pictures) and Soumyajit Majumdar (LOK Arts Collective) are producing the film, with UK partners Moringa Studios and HC Films. The film is slated for release during Durga Puja.
