Kolhapur was struck by violence late Friday night as clashes between two groups in the Siddharthnagar area resulted in approximately 10 injuries and damage to several vehicles. The altercation included stone-pelting, arson, and vandalism.
The unrest reportedly began during a program organized to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the Rajebagswar Football Club. The erection of flex banners, posters, and a sound system for the event allegedly sparked anger among local residents, who complained of the inconvenience. As tensions escalated, some locals, including members of certain groups, voiced their objections to the arrangements, leading to heated arguments that soon spiraled into a full-blown clash.
By approximately 10 p.m., the situation had deteriorated, with both sides engaging in heavy stone-pelting. Two cars were set on fire, and an estimated eight to nine vehicles, including auto-rickshaws and parked cars, were vandalized. Eyewitness accounts described shattered windows and debris scattered throughout the area, with significant damage to roadside parking. According to one report, the violence stemmed from a dispute over the installation of a football club board in front of a park and the construction of a sound-and-light structure. A group had objected to the installation and complained to the police, who ordered the removal of the structure, further angering the opposing group and leading to stone-pelting and property damage.
Authorities responded quickly, deploying over 200 police personnel to the scene to regain control. Kolhapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Yogesh Kumar Gupta stated that the violence arose from a "misunderstanding between two communities" near CPR Hospital. He urged the public to remain calm and not to be swayed by rumors. SP Gupta also noted that community leaders from both groups have appealed for peace and have requested that misinformation not be spread.
While investigations are ongoing, no arrests have been made as of yet. Police have filed a case and are working to identify those responsible for the violence. Community leaders have joined authorities in calling for peace and cooperation to prevent any further disturbances. Senior police officials, including SP Dheeraj Kumar Bachchu, DySP Priya Patil, and DySP Tanaji Sawant, were present to help manage the situation. While one report indicated that police managed to quickly extinguish the fire, several two-wheelers were also damaged.
The situation is now reportedly under control, with authorities closely monitoring the area.
