The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced the arrest of Dinesh D. Gehlot on Saturday, August 23, 2025, a proclaimed offender who had been on the run in connection with a high-value bank fraud case dating back over two decades. The case, registered on May 31, 2004, involves allegations that Gehlot defrauded Bank of Baroda by dishonestly obtaining a housing loan through the use of forged and fabricated documents.

Following an investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet on April 30, 2007, naming Gehlot as one of the conspirators in the fraudulent scheme. However, Gehlot failed to appear for the trial and did not respond to court summons or warrants, becoming untraceable since 2024.

The agency revealed that multiple Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) were issued against him. Ultimately, on December 9, 2024, the Special Judge for CBI, Greater Bombay, issued a Proclamation warrant against Gehlot. Despite continuous efforts to locate him, the absconding accused remained untraceable.

According to officials, Gehlot frequently changed residences, misled local residents about his real identity, and maintained minimal contact with the community, making it exceedingly difficult for authorities to track him.

The CBI deployed advanced technological tools and identity-tracking databases to analyze Gehlot's digital footprint to ascertain his current identity and location. This was supplemented by extensive field investigations and on-ground inquiries, which led the CBI team to successfully locate Gehlot in Noida.

Gehlot was apprehended on August 20, 2025, and subsequently produced before the Competent Court in Mumbai, which remanded him to judicial custody to face trial proceedings. He is currently undergoing trial.

The CBI highlighted that this case exemplifies how integrating technology-driven intelligence platforms with the persistent and coordinated efforts of investigating officers on the ground can significantly enhance law enforcement agencies' operational capabilities in tracing and apprehending long-absconding offenders.
