Kolkata Police have filed a 658-page chargesheet against four individuals in connection with the alleged gang rape of a law student on the South Calcutta Law College campus. The chargesheet was submitted to the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alipore approximately two months after the incident, which occurred on June 25.
The four accused named in the chargesheet are Monojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, Pramit Mukherjee, and Pinaki Banerjee. Monojit Mishra, 31, is identified as the prime accused, an alumnus of the college, a criminal lawyer, and a former contractual non-teaching staff member. He also has alleged links to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) student wing. Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20, are current students of the college. Pinaki Banerjee, 55, was the security guard on duty at the time of the incident.
The charges against the four individuals include gang rape, wrongful confinement, kidnapping with the intention to cause harm, concealing evidence, and misleading the investigation. These charges fall under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. According to a senior police officer, the charges are based on technical, scientific, and circumstantial evidence. All four accused are currently in judicial custody.
According to the victim's complaint, the incident occurred after she refused a marriage proposal from Mishra. Mishra, who had been working as temporary staff at the college since 2024, was terminated from his service following the allegations. Ahmed and Mukherjee were expelled from the institute. Mishra, Ahmed, and Mukherjee were arrested on June 26. Banerjee was apprehended the next day.
Police sources state that the chargesheet outlines key pieces of forensic and digital evidence that support the survivor's written complaint. The Detective Department and Kasba Police Station coordinated to submit the chargesheet.
