Sunita Ahuja, the wife of Bollywood actor Govinda, has recently shared insights into her early married life and the adjustments she made to accommodate her husband's and mother-in-law's preferences. Married to Govinda since 1987, Sunita opened up about how her wardrobe transitioned from miniskirts to sarees after marriage.
Sunita, who grew up in Bandra, a relatively affluent Mumbai neighborhood, revealed that Govinda, who hailed from Virar, wasn't a fan of her wearing short skirts. According to Sunita, Govinda believed his mother wouldn't approve of her wearing mini skirts. This led Sunita to adopt sarees, a traditional Indian garment, to align with her mother-in-law's expectations.
In an interview, Sunita humorously recounted her initial struggles with wearing a saree, especially during her first meeting with Govinda's mother. She admitted she was very young at the time, only 16 years old, and didn't know how to wear a saree properly. Despite the initial difficulties, she managed to wear one for the occasion, albeit in a "haphazard manner".
Sunita also shared that Govinda was not only particular about her clothing but also seemingly a bit "backward" in his views during their early days. She mentioned that he didn't like her choice of clothes and even her boy-cut hairstyle when they first met. Over time, despite their initial differences and frequent arguments, love blossomed between them.
Sunita also spoke about her strong bond with Govinda's mother, emphasizing that she married Govinda because of her mother-in-law and that they never had the typical "saas-bahu" conflicts. She fondly recalls how his mother showered love on her.
Govinda, on the other hand, admitted to judging Sunita for her dressing style early in their relationship. He confessed that he even instructed her to "get her life in order and mind her manners".
Despite these initial differences and adjustments, Sunita and Govinda have maintained a strong bond for over 40 years. Sunita has been a constant support to Govinda, standing by him through his highs and lows, both before and after he achieved stardom. She believes there's a reason their relationship has lasted so long.
Sunita and Govinda's marriage was initially kept a secret for a year due to concerns that it might negatively impact his career. When their daughter, Tina, was born, Govinda was busy with five film shifts in a single day. Sunita's mother-in-law was present with her, and Govinda would visit after each shift to check on the baby's arrival.
