The Tampa Bay Lightning entered the NHL in 1992, bringing a splash of sunshine to the ice with their inaugural uniforms featuring black, blue, and silver. These original jerseys went through several alterations, primarily focused on tweaking the colors and font of the name and numbers. A unique feature was the "victory stripes" on the underarm gussets, which gained significance in 2004 when the team won its first Stanley Cup.

In the early years, the Lightning's jerseys underwent several modifications. The name and number on the back became italicized. Later, a different font was adopted, with the name displayed in a vertical arch. For three seasons, the team sported blue alternate jerseys adorned with a sublimated design.

Acknowledging fan concerns about the legibility of the number font, the team switched to a standard block font in 2001. This change coincided with a general effort to present a crisper, more professional image.

The introduction of the Reebok Edge uniform system in 2007 prompted a redesign of the Lightning's jerseys. In 2008, a new blue alternate jersey was introduced, featuring "TAMPA BAY" inside the rear tail stripe.

In 2011, the Lightning unveiled their "uniforms of the future." The initial plan was to use only blue and white, but black trim was added to the numbers and the lightning bolt on the pants due to popular demand. The alternate jersey was retained. A few years later, the shoulder logos on the alternate home jersey were updated to the team's current primary logo. When the team changed their primary home jerseys to blue, the alternate jersey became black, keeping the "BOLTS" diagonal wordmark.

When the team moved to the Adidas Adizero jersey system, the wordmark above the crest on the road jerseys was removed. A new black alternate uniform was introduced, with a pattern inspired by Adidas' Primeknit shoes on the sleeves, back numbers, and socks.

Over the years, the Lightning have also introduced special event uniforms. In 2021, a Reverse Retro jersey was released, which swapped the black and blue elements of the team's first Stanley Cup-winning uniform and brought back the victory stripes. For the 2022 Stadium Series, the Lightning introduced a new version of their diagonal "BOLTS" uniform.
