OpenAI has launched its most affordable ChatGPT subscription plan to date, called 'ChatGPT Go', in India. Priced at ₹399 per month (approximately $4.57 USD), the new tier aims to make advanced AI tools more accessible to a wider range of users in a key market.

This new subscription tier bridges the gap between the free version and the 'Plus' version, which is priced at ₹1,999 per month. Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, announced that India is the first country where 'ChatGPT Go' is being rolled out, with plans to expand to other countries based on user feedback.

The 'ChatGPT Go' plan offers several enhanced features compared to the free version:

  • Extended access to GPT-5: Users can enjoy more usage of OpenAI's flagship model.
  • Extended access to image generation: Create more images for work or play.
  • Extended access to file uploads: Analyze and work with more documents, spreadsheets, and other files.
  • Extended access to advanced data analysis: Utilize tools like Python for data exploration and problem-solving more often.
  • Longer memory: Keep conversations flowing with a larger context window for more personalized responses.
  • Access to projects, tasks, and custom GPTs: Organize work, track progress, and build personalized AI tools with more flexibility.
  • Higher message limits: Send up to ten times more messages compared to the free version.
  • More image generations: Generate ten times more images compared to the free version.
  • More file uploads: Upload ten times more files compared to the free version.
  • Double the memory length: Enjoy extended memory capabilities compared to the free plan.

In addition to the new 'Go' plan, OpenAI has also introduced local pricing in Indian Rupees (INR) for all its subscription tiers. This means that users in India will now see prices displayed in INR instead of US dollars, eliminating confusion around currency conversions. Furthermore, OpenAI is now accepting payments through Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's most widely used digital payment method, making it easier for a larger audience to upgrade to a paid plan.

With the introduction of 'ChatGPT Go', OpenAI now offers four tiers in India:

  • Free plan: With limited usage.
  • ChatGPT Go: At ₹399 per month.
  • ChatGPT Plus: At ₹1,999 per month.
  • ChatGPT Pro: At ₹19,900 per month.

The 'Go' tier aims to bridge the gap between the free and Plus plans, providing users with more breathing room for daily usage at a lower cost.

OpenAI's focus on the Indian market is evident in its recent moves. CEO Sam Altman has stated that he expects India to become OpenAI's top market by volume in the near future. The company is also working with the Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY) for AI education initiatives and collaborating with local partners to make AI work-ready for everyone. This India-first rollout of ChatGPT Go highlights OpenAI's strategy to expand AI adoption in cost-sensitive markets by offering flexible and locally relevant options.
